Accessing Therapy in Sydney
Starting therapy in Sydney for the first time can feel nerve-wracking, especially with long wait times, referral requirements, and uncertainty about costs.
According to NSW Health research in South Western Sydney, people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and refugee communities often face barriers such as limited translated information, under-use of interpreter services, and less awareness of mental health support. These challenges can make finding the right therapist even harder.
At Talk Your Heart Out, we aim to provide uncompromising and high-quality support to everyone by offering:
Flexible online sessions
Immediate access to high-quality therapy (ie no GP referral needed)
Transparent pricing and discounts for bulk session purchases
A large pool of culturally sensitive Therapists
We’re also working towards integrating Medicare rebates and insurance coverage soon.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a session with a therapist?
At TYHO, each online audio and video session is 60 minutes.
How much do therapy services cost?
The base pricing of therapy at TYHO starts at A$150. All your sessions will include access to high-quality services and a tailored therapeutic plan. Depending on their expertise, some Therapists may charge a slightly higher rate.
For example, Empathy and Expert Therapists have specialist certifications (EMDR, Gottman Method for couples therapy, etc), which equip them to deal with complex and serious issues such as trauma or addiction.
We aim to provide reasonably priced services at all times. In line with that, you may also wish to look into discount options. We offer a 6% discount for packages costing between A$600 and A$1199, and an 8% discount for packages costing between A$1200 and A$5000.
Are sessions with a therapist private and confidential?
Yes, all therapy sessions at TYHO are private and confidential.
TYHO Therapists follow strict professional and ethical standards to keep your sessions confidential. There are some circumstances where they may be obliged to disclose information, for example, if someone is at risk of harm or if the law requires disclosure.
In such situations, relevant parties such as family members, courts, police, or crisis services may be informed. The TYHO platform typically leaves decisions about sharing session information, such as notes or messages, to the Therapist’s professional judgment.
If you have any questions or concerns about confidentiality, you are welcome to raise them with your Therapist at any time.
Do therapists in Sydney provide weekend or evening sessions?
Many therapists in Sydney offer after-hours appointments to accommodate work and family schedules.
If you’re looking to explore therapy amidst a busy work week or personal responsibilities, TYHO Therapists in Sydney offer weekend sessions, evening sessions and same-day sessions.
Can I claim therapy sessions on Medicare?
TYHO plans to integrate Medicare in the near future to make therapy more accessible. In the meantime, you can still save by purchasing therapy sessions in packages.
Do I need a GP referral to see a therapist at TYHO?
No, you don’t need a mental health care plan from a GP or a referral to get started on our platform. Simply review the Therapist profiles, find someone you truly connect with, and book your sessions right away.
We also offer same-day and after-hours bookings to make therapy more convenient for your schedule. If you’re having trouble finding the right Therapist, feel free to reach out to us.
How do I choose a therapist in Sydney?
To find a TYHO therapist in Sydney, visit our website at https://app.talkyourheartout.com/. Here, you can input your preferences using the filters. For example, you can search for therapists based on gender, specialisations, issues, mode of therapy, languages spoken, and more.
After applying the filters, you will see a list of therapists who match your requirements. Review each therapist’s introductory videos, therapeutic approaches, expertise, and client reviews to shortlist a few.
Book an online audio or video session with one of your shortlisted therapists and attend the first session. Sometimes, finding the right fit can take a little while, so we recommend giving both the therapist and the process a chance to build the therapeutic relationship.
However, if you continue to feel uncomfortable or struggle to open up even after several sessions, feel free to try therapy with someone else from your shortlist. You are also welcome to reach out to us at [email protected] for support in selecting the right therapist.
Is online therapy available if I live outside Sydney?
Yes, you can book online therapy sessions at TYHO even if you live outside Sydney.
Simply find a therapist who offers online audio or video sessions, select your preferred date and time slot, and make your payment to confirm your session. As long as you have a stable internet connection, you can connect with our Therapists from anywhere in NSW, including regional and rural areas outside Sydney.
