Accessing Counselling Services in Sydney

According to research, adults in Sydney hesitate to seek counselling services for many reasons. The first hurdle is cost. Mental health services are expensive in Sydney, and services like psychotherapy that are offered at lower costs are not accessed often due to limited exposure. Seeing a licensed Sydney counsellor can easily cost A$200 per hour.

Secondly, there’s often a gap between the language used in counselling and the way people naturally talk about their emotions.

Many men in Sydney who could really benefit from counselling services find terms like ‘processing sadness’ or ‘being vulnerable’ unfamiliar or even uncomfortable, as these phrases can be perceived as signs of weakness. This makes the counselling language feel inaccessible to those who might need it most.

At TYHO, we aim to address the above issues by providing:

  • Affordable counselling options to make quality support immediately accessible
  • Culturally-attuned counsellors who provide personalised services
  • Flexible online sessions so you can get help from wherever you are

We’re also working towards integrating Medicare rebates and insurance coverage soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a session with a Sydney counsellor?

At TYHO, each online audio and video session is 60 minutes.

How much do counselling services cost?

Counselling in Sydney starts from A$150 per session. Every counselling session at TYHO gives you access to quality services, a personalised therapeutic plan, and a counsellor who truly understands your needs and presenting problems.

Some counsellors may have slightly higher fees depending on their experience and specialisation.

For instance, our Empathy and Expert counsellors hold advanced certifications such as EMDR or the Gottman Method for couples therapy. Their training allows them to work effectively with more complex concerns, including trauma, addiction, long-standing relationship patterns, and other specialised areas.

We’re committed to keeping counselling services reasonably priced. If you’re planning ahead, you can also explore our package discounts. Packages between A$600 and A$1199 come with a 6% discount, while packages between A$1200 and A$5000 come with an 8% discount.

Many of our clients also find packages helpful because they lock in sessions for several months, reducing the work of thinking through the logistics every time and making the counselling journey more structured.

Are sessions with a counsellor private and confidential?

Yes, all counselling sessions at TYHO are private and confidential. Our Sydney counsellors follow strict professional and ethical guidelines to protect your privacy.

In rare situations, the professional may need to share information with relevant parties. For example, if the counsellor believes that you or someone else is at immediate risk of harm.

In those cases, relevant parties such as family members, courts, police, or crisis support services may be contacted.

On the TYHO platform, decisions about sharing session-related information (like notes or messages) are left to Sydney’s counsellors’ professional judgment.

If you’d like reassurance, you can also ask your counsellors how they handle confidentiality, what safeguards they use, and what exceptions apply.

Can I claim counselling sessions on Medicare?

TYHO plans to integrate Medicare in the near future to make counselling services in Sydney more accessible. In the meantime, you can still save by purchasing sessions in packages.

How do I book a session?

Booking a session with TYHO is fully online and takes less than a minute of your time.

You can start by browsing our list of Sydney counsellors. Each profile includes their specialities, approach, availability, and fees, so you can choose someone who feels like the right fit for you.

Once you’ve found a counsellor you’d like to work with, select a time slot that suits you and confirm your booking.

After that, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details you need for your session. If you ever need to reschedule, you can do so easily through your TYHO account.
