Brief Introduction to Trauma Therapy
Trauma is the emotional and psychological impact of a deeply distressing event, whether a single incident (acute trauma), prolonged exposure (chronic trauma), or repeated interpersonal harm (complex trauma). Left unaddressed, trauma can affect sleep, relationships, mood, and daily functioning, and may develop into PTSD.
Trauma Therapy creates a safe environment to process traumatic events, reduce the intensity of the memories, and rebuild a sense of safety and control. TYHO’s Trauma Therapists in Singapore use evidence-based approaches chosen to fit each individual — including EMDR, Trauma-Focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Brainspotting.
TYHO’s Trauma Therapists offer trauma counselling in Singapore, online and in-person at Tanjong Pagar and City Hall.

EMDR Therapy Singapore
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR therapy in Singapore is considered to be the gold standard for trauma recovery. EMDR is also recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for PTSD, and it’s one of the most well-researched trauma therapies available. Unlike talk therapies, it doesn’t require you to describe your trauma in detail.
EMDR therapy involves rhythmic bilateral stimulation (eye movements, auditory tones, or gentle taps) to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. In sessions with an EMDR-certified TYHO therapist, you hold a distressing memory in mind while engaging in this stimulation. The memory’s emotional charge reduces over time. What once felt immediate and threatening starts to settle into the past.
EMDR then works to strengthen positive beliefs about yourself to replace the ones trauma created. It’s well-suited to single-incident trauma like accidents, assaults, and sudden loss, but clinicians now use it for complex and developmental trauma too. Many clients make meaningful progress faster than they expected.
Other Therapeutic Approaches for Trauma Therapy
Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT, also known as trauma-focused therapy)
TF-CBT helps trauma survivors spot the unhelpful beliefs trauma creates, thoughts like “I deserved this” or “I’ll never feel safe again”, and replace them with more accurate ones. It is evidence-backed, and widely used for children and adolescents. It is also increasingly adapted for adults working through childhood trauma.
TYHO’s TF-CBT therapists move through three phases: building coping skills first, gradually processing the traumatic experience, then consolidating what’s been learned.
Brainspotting
Brainspotting works on a straightforward premise: where you look affects how you feel. Developed by David Grand in 2003, it identifies specific eye positions called “brainspots” that correspond to areas of stored trauma in the brain and body.
Some trauma doesn’t have words. It lives in the body, surfaces in ways that are hard to explain, and tends to resist approaches built around language. Brainspotting is thought to reach subcortical brain regions, the parts that control survival responses but can’t be accessed through talk or conscious thought alone. Your Trauma Therapist finds the eye position, holds the focus (often with bilateral sound), and lets the brain do the processing.
Brainspotting is used for early childhood experiences, body-held trauma, and trauma that’s stayed stuck despite previous mental health counselling. TYHO has brainspotting-trained Trauma Therapists available online and in-person.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT takes a different route to recovery. Rather than working to eliminate distressing thoughts and feelings, it helps you change how you relate to them so they no longer run your life.
The approach builds what psychologists call psychological flexibility: the ability to act on your values even when difficult emotions are present. For trauma survivors, this often starts with avoidance. Avoidance feels protective, and in the short term it is, but it tends to shrink the life around it over time. ACT helps you expand that life again, gradually, without requiring the pain to disappear first.
It works well on its own and pairs well with EMDR or CPT. TYHO’s ACT therapists are experienced in applying the approach specifically to trauma and PTSD.
Book a session with a certified Trauma Therapist on TYHO. EMDR, TF-CBT, CPT, Brainspotting, and ACT available online and in-person from S$130.80.
What to Expect in Trauma Therapy
Starting Trauma Therapy can feel like a big step. Here’s what to expect when you book with a TYHO Trauma Therapist.
Your first session
A mental health professional who provides trauma-informed therapy in Singapore will not ask you to relive the trauma. The first session generally helps build trust and gain an understanding of your background, what brought you to Trauma Therapy, and what you’re hoping to change. You’ll get a chance to ask questions about your treatment plan, and get a sense of whether your Trauma Therapist is the right fit for you. Most of our clients find it much less confronting than they expected.
How sessions progress
Sessions are typically weekly or fortnightly, however, it depends on the circumstances and preferences of the client. From the second or third session onward, your Trauma Therapist will work with you using the approach that suits your needs — whether that’s a cognitive approach like CPT or TF-CBT, a body-based one like EMDR or brainspotting, or a combination. Many people start to notice shifts in the intensity of their symptoms within the first few sessions (though this varies). Improvements include flashbacks becoming less vivid, triggers feeling less overwhelming, and sleep gradually improving.
How long it takes
There’s no fixed timeframe for Trauma Therapy. For example, someone processing a single event is likely to move faster than someone working through long-standing or complex trauma. TYHO Trauma Therapists work towards lasting recovery rather than short-term relief.
Your Trauma Therapist will review progress with you regularly and adjust accordingly.
Understanding Trauma and PTSD
Not everyone who experiences trauma develops Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but knowing the difference can help you find the right support.
Trauma is the emotional and psychological mark left by a distressing experience. PTSD is a diagnosable condition that can develop when trauma goes unprocessed, marked by flashbacks, avoidance, mood changes, and a nervous system that won’t fully stand down. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) tends to develop from prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse or long-term relationship harm. It shares the core symptoms of PTSD and additionally affects emotional regulation and how you see yourself.
You don’t need a formal diagnosis for therapy to help. TYHO’s trauma therapists work across the full spectrum, whether you’ve been diagnosed with PTSD, you’re recovering from a single event, or you’re carrying something you’ve never quite had language for.
Your first session will help clarify what you’re experiencing and which approach makes most sense.
If you’re looking for PTSD treatment in Singapore, TYHO’s Trauma Therapists are trained in EMDR and CPT, two of the most evidence-based approaches for PTSD.
